Golden Globes 2016: Kirsten Dunst, Olivia Wilde and More Stars Who Took the Plunge in Low-Cut Gowns

Award season and skin-baring dresses pretty much go hand-in-hand, so while all the plunging necklines we’re seeing on the Golden Globes red carpet this year are definitely daring, they’re not exactly a totally shocking sartorial choice.

The clear masters of this trend are Kirsten DunstOlivia Wilde, and Jenna Dewan-Tatum who all showed off some serious décolletage in their Golden Globes dresses of choice. The Fargo actress’s black velvet Valentino column dress boasted the most skin we’ve seen all night, featuring a neckline that ends just above her navel held together with some very tenuous strings. Wilde, on the other hand, opted for a classic, much more wearable iteration of this trend with her form-fitting, burgundy sequin Michael Kors dress, which was balanced out by her large stone choker. Jenna’s dress also nailed the look, showing off a whole lot of cleavage with a hint of under-boob thanks to her extra-wide V-neckline, the swirling sequin pattern, however, kept Dewan-Tatum’s aesthetic clean and sophisticated.

But Kirsten, Olivia, and Jenna weren’t the only stars who brought the heat on the red carpet. Jaime Alexander wore a forest green gown from Italian designer Genny, emphasizing the dress’s deep neckline by going without a necklace and keeping the rest of her look super simple with stud earrings and a knotted up-do. Joanne Froggatt also took the plunge in a column dress with a ruched sweetheart neckline with an invisible overlay to guarantee her night would be wardrobe malfunction-free. While it’s easy for this look to become overly sexy, Zendaya‘s tiered Marchesa dress managed to embrace the racy neckline trend while still looking very demure and polished. But most impressively, each actress manages to take this style and completely make it their own.

Zendaya: How I Learned to Be Comfortable With My Curls

When it comes to confidence, Zendaya has a ton of it — especially in the hair department. She fearlessly changes up her style from red carpet to red carpet, and has even started a movement in the process defending herself from hair critics. But the Chi spokesperson reveals that it took some growing for her to get to that point.

ZendayaChristopher Polk/Getty

“Growing up,I wasn’t very confident in my curls,” the actress tells PeopleStyle. “It wasn’t like the hair that girls around me had. And nobody really knew what to do with my hair. My mom is white and my dad is black — they have two very different hair types. So we learned how to manage my hair together, and I also watched YouTube videos to find easy styles to do.”

Yes, even Disney stars aren’t happy with the hair they’re born with (sound like any other teens you know?). “Obviously you want what you can’t have, so I wanted different hair than what I had,” she shares. “And it wasn’t until I got older that I learned you don’t know what you’ve got until it’s gone.”

But, like the rest of us, growing into herself allowed her to accept the things she wasn’t comfortable with. “There is nobody out there that is completely, 100 percent satisfied with every portion of themselves,” she admits. “And as you grow up, or as you grow older, you have to learn about yourself and you have to become more familiar with yourself.”

These days, she’s constantly experimenting with new, bold hair looks, and that has come with some practice too. “When I was younger, I was afraid to experiment with my look because I was worried about what people thought,” she says. “But as I’ve gotten older and become more confident in myself, I just don’t care.”

Which is why, when she found herself in the middle of some hair-related drama at last year’s Oscars, she spoke up.

“I think a lot of lessons were learned from a lot of different people,” she says about the situation. “I didn’t know that people were going to pay attention to the paragraph that I wrote on Instagram. I was just thinking that someone out there is going to read this, and it’ll stop them from being insensitive. I was raised to stand up and say something when you feel that something is wrong.”

And she’s equally as dedicated to sharing that confidence with other girls. “I like who I am, and I hope that I can help a lot of other young women get there,” she says. “I think that a big part of that is showing that you can dress and wear your hair however you want. People will say whatever they have to say, but as long as you feel good and you feel confident and you’re taking those steps to feel comfortable with yourself, then you’re good!”

Key in that demographic? Her sweet younger relatives. “When it comes to my nieces and stuff you have to get them to love your hair, especially my little niece who’s gorgeous with a curly head of hair,” she says. “I just really want them to love what they have.”

Zendaya‘s makeup skills were bound to land her a cosmetics contract eventually — and she just landed one of the most prestigious of them all, as the latest face of CoverGirl!

The actress broke the news on Instagram Thursday with a video of herself reciting her new favorite tag line: “Easy, Breezy, Beautiful, CoverGirl.” And based on her fearless attitude towards beauty, it’s no surprise at all that she’s rocking not one, not two, but three braided topknots and bold neon makeup in the clip.

The 19-year-old star maintains her mantra is all about embracing her own unique style. “I can’t wait to share some of my own beauty tips with fans, and work alongside CoverGirl to continue empowering girls and women to celebrate their individuality,” she said about the partnership.

Zendaya, who is also a spokesperson for CHI, teased the partnership on Instagram earlier this week, hinting that “something beautiful” was coming soon — complete with a close-up of her pastel bangs, purple brows, and lime green and teal eyeshadow.

This is major for the star, who’s finally taking her passion for beauty to the next level. Following in the footsteps of stars like Rihanna, Katy Perry, and Taylor Swift, Zendaya will now have the opportunity to work with the legendary Pat McGrath (CoverGirl’s creative director) on the reg — bringing her beauty tutorial dreams even closer to a reality. She posted last week, “I need to start doing makeup tutorials.” Um, yeah, you do!

Zendaya: How My Disney Days Ruined My Hair

Zendaya makes headlines for her hair on a regular basis these days, but there was a time when the CHI spokeswoman was worried her hair was damaged beyond measure — and Disney was to blame.

ZendayaGetty

“I’ve experienced hair nightmares,” the actress tells PeopleStyle. “On the first season of the Disney Channel’s Shake It Up, heat-styling destroyed my hair. I was only 14 years old, and I didn’t know how to protect my hair, so it took over two years to grow it back, which really sucked!”

RELATED PHOTOS: Celeb Style and Beauty TBTs That Blew Our Minds

She’s come a long way since those days of singed strands. “Over time, I learned how to properly care for my hair, and I partnered with Chi because the brand has so many products that protect it,” she says. “I use the Argan Oil line because it’s really moisturizing. I condition my hair every day, and I shampoo it every other day.”

And to prevent further damage, she tries to avoid heat-styling when she’s not heading to a red carpet. “Day-to-day, I wear my hair as natural as possible to minimize damage,” she explains. “To define my curls, I use a blow dryer with a diffuser attachment and Chi Styling Cream Gel, which helps me crunch my curls up.”

RELATED VIDEO: Giuliana Rancic Says She Got Death Threats after Fashion Police Zendaya Comments

When she’s ready to have fun with her hair, however, she really has fun with it. “I am not afraid to have fun with my look,” she says. “A lot of the styles I wear are inspired by Cher, Joan Jett, Grace Jones and Diana Ross. When people see me, I want them to understand the character that I am that night. I want them to have a moment.”

So when it comes to beauty, we’re always taking her advice — especially now, as she’s the newest face of CoverGirl.

Grammys 2016: Zendaya Gives Us Major David Bowie Vibes in Her Mullet and Suit

Considering David Bowie passed away just under a month ago, it’s hard not to feel how heavily the spirit of the late singer hangs over tonight’s Grammy awards show.  Aside from the tribute Lady Gaga is planning to perform in his honor, Bowie’s presence can also be felt on the red carpet where Zendaya channeled a little Ziggy Stardust, debuting a full-blown blonde mullet on the red carpet.

There’s never been any doubt that Zendaya is a style chameleon, constantly changing up her look to suit her mood and the occasion. So of course, she once again went with her gut for her look at tonight’s Grammys, telling People that she was inspired by past eras, though not Bowie specifically, and that she loves the powerful image of a woman in a suit. While the star may not have been intentionally paying homage to the legendary musician, pairing her blonde “business in the front, party in the back” strands (so very Labyrinth) with a very masculine, sharply tailored double-breasted Dsquared2 suit (another Bowie staple) is undoubtedly something of which Bowie would have approved.

And as if her hair and outfit weren’t buzzy enough, the newly minted CoverGirl also did her own makeup for the big night, opting for something, “a bit more natural to balance out [her menswear] look.” For eyes, Zendaya wanted to keep “the look soft, but with major lashes,” using CoverGirl’s truNAKED eyeshadow palette, a pop of truBLEND blush, and a subtle touch of color on the lips with Colorlicious Oh Sugar! in Caramel.

Zendaya on the Red Carpet Experience: 'It Has Allowed Me a Lot of Freedom and Confidence'

Zendaya Coleman has arguably become one of the most interesting young stars to watch on the red carpet. Certainly, at 19, she’s become one of the most controversial. But whether or not you like what she’s wearing—like a mullet at the Grammys or thigh-high buckle heels at the Republic Records Grammy after-party—is not the point, as she told PEOPLE at Essence’s Black Women in Hollywood Luncheon in Los Angeles on Thursday.

Zendaya Essence LuncheonVince Bucci/Invision/AP

“I feel like every kind of fashion choice that my stylist Law [Roach] and I have made have kind of developed us creatively,” she said. “We’ve been able to grow more. We’ve learned more about ourselves. It’s allowed me a lot of freedom and confidence.”

For the luncheon, she selected a silk robe and jumpsuit by Thakoon, both of which are currently sold out online. “I thought it was very chic and kind of laid-back,” she said of the look, “but also still fancy enough and it is really comfortable.” (She accessorized with jewelry including an AS29 ring and John Hardy bracelet.)

But while Coleman often looks effortless—as seen above in her most recent looks—her red carpet glam plans actually take hours. “I’m slow, I like to take my time,” she said, noting that her hair and makeup process take the longest. However, she doesn’t mind, using the time to “get caught up on all my shows,” she said. What’s she currently watching? “Scandal and American Crime,” she said. “Though it really depends.”

The Celeb Teens Whose Style You Covet Open Up About Taking Fashion Risks

As a teenager in Hollywood, it can be intimidating to go through your awkward stage in front of the press. But Zendaya, Willow Smith and Kiernan Shipka seem to have forgone said stage completely — and not only that, each has made a major name for themselves as a style star in her own right, all before the age of 20. As the cover stars of W Magazine‘s April issue, they have a lot to say about where they’ve found their fashion and beauty inspiration and how they’re inspiring their generation.

W MagazineWilly Vanderperre/W Magazine

The youngest risk-taker of the three, 15-year-old Smith, just landed a role as Chanel’s new “ambassadress” — and she’s been so visible in the world of teenage beauty, she wrote a song devoted to her hair. So when she showed up to her cover shoot with safety pins woven into her do, it was bound to set some trends.

“That was my idea,” Smith tells W. “I was in my bathroom yesterday and saw some safety pins on the counter and was just like, ‘Let me stab a dread real quick.’ When I did it, I was, like, ‘Oh, this is dope.’ ”

And what do her parents, Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith, think of her knack for experimentation? They stopped weighing in half a lifetime ago. “Only when I was 6 or 7,” she explains of the last time they shared their opinions. “I wanted to wear things then that might have been too crazy. But now they know I set my own boundaries.”

RELATED VIDEO: Zendaya’s Tips to Achieve ‘On Fleek’ Eyebrows

But that’s not to say Willow doesn’t turn to her mom for inspiration, particularly from her earlier touring years. “When she was on tour with Ozzfest, she was very raunchy,” Smith admits. “I loved watching her onstage … I think the first song that ever made an impression on me was my mom performing ‘Bleed All Over Me.’ I would sing it over and over.”

Zendaya W MagazineWilly Vanderperre/W Magazine

Zendaya is another star with an outsize influence on beauty trends, not only with her bold hairstyles (and her fearless voice defending her looks) and risk-taking fashion, but also in Barbie doll form. Which is big for the star, who says that didn’t play with the dolls growing up because they didn’t look like her.

“After my Oscar moment, Mattel contacted us,” she tells W. “They specifically wanted to make a Barbie that looked like me, in my exact outfit from the Oscars. I was so excited that Barbie wanted to diversify their brand. Now all little girls can have a Barbie that looks like them. My Barbie is in a box. I never let anyone touch her.”

For 16-year-old Shipka, who’s landed on People’s Best Dressed list two years in a row, her role on Mad Men is what sparked her mature sense of style.

Mad Men introduced me to the power of fashion,” Shipka tells W about her character on the show. “I realized that style could tell a story … In the last season, Sally wants to impress a boy, so she dresses up.”

While country stars were showing off a lot of skin in sheer dresses and colorful plunging gowns at the ACM Awards in Las Vegas, pop stars were flaunting their curves in a different way at the iHeartRadio Music Awards in L.A.

Taylor Swift and Selena Gomez showed their BFF bond is stronger than ever, both wearing jumpsuits to the event. And they were not your basic onesies. Tay selected a skin-tight black sequin Saint Laurent catsuit paired with chunky patent leather Giuseppe Zanotti platforms, plus Vhernier and Melinda Maria jewelry.

Gomez put her abs out there in a red cutout design that gave a peek at her crazy-toned obliques, accessorizing with silver shoes and a double choker necklace. Her hair was effortlessly wavy and undone looking.

The Bright Idea: Celebs' Unexpected Colorful Shoe-and-Dress Pairings Are Your Spring Outfit Inspo

When the weather warms up and you can finally ditch the tights for your favorite springtime dresses, you might be tempted to reach for everything colorful that’s been just sitting in your closet all season. Great news: This year, that impulse couldn’t be more on-trend. Check out six oh-so-fresh way stars are pairing their brightest heels with their boldest dresses, then let us convince you to get crazy with your own color combinations.

colorful pumps with bright dressesPablo/INK/FameFlyNet; Courtesy Ellen; Robert Kamau

Reason One: The contrast adds edge to a sunny shift dress: As Reese Witherspoon demonstrates, a lemon-meringue-sweet dress (hers is Draper James) would be over-the-top with matching accessories. The contrast of the petal-pink pump and bag give it some sass.

Reason Two: It’s never too early to plan your summer holiday outfits. Jessica Biel (in Chanel) can recycle her Ellen outfit when Memorial Day and the 4th of July roll around. Pin the look now, then copy her totally non-cheesy red, white and blue ensemble when the holidays roll around.

RELATED PHOTOS: 16 Stars Whose Wardrobes Can’t Wait One More Minute for Spring

Reason Three: It makes a vintage-style dress look of-the-moment: Lupita Nyong’o’s ’70s-inspired mint Gucci shirtdress gets a fresh update thanks to the pointy pastel pink pumps.

Reason Four: The surprise factor instantly makes it cool: Rumer Willis could have easily gone for a simple nude heel with this yellow eyelet dress, but the unexpected metallic lavender instantly upgrades the outfit to something more memorable.

Reasons Five and Six: A hot/cool contrast is so easy and so impactful: Ready to try the trend, but not sure where to start? Follow the leads of Lily Aldridge (in Victoria Beckham dress and Gianvito Rossi heels) and Zendaya (in Monique Lhuillier) by choosing a shoe as bright as the dress — but make sure it’s from an opposing color family. Their fiery dresses are perfectly offset by their icy blue shoes.

Zendaya loves being tall.

The 19-year-old actress was spotted Wednesday at Glamour‘s Game Changers Lunch in Los Angeles, and couldn’t help but show off her height in a pair of gorgeous silver sandals.

“6’2 with heels,” the star captioned a Instagram photo of herself from the waist down.

Zendaya paired her metallic Stuart Weitzman shoes with a white flowing top and a silver metallic skirt, both by Manning Caretell.

The model and actress also posted a full-length shot of her look to Instagram.

Zendaya was among stars like Lea Michele, Regina King, Emily Ratajkowski and Ariel Winter at the event.

The K.C. Undercover star has often been vocal about — and proud of — her height.

The teen doesn’t shy away from going taller either. In fact, she told PeopleStyle last year that sky-high heels are a constant in her closet.

“I always tell my fans that people are going to comment on your height regardless, so you might as well be as tall as possible and look good doing it,” she shared.

And she’s not shy about posting photos that call out her tall frame.

Instagram Photo

“Yes…I’m a tall 6’4″(with these heels) skinny glass of sparkling water and I love it. 😏😘😂#bodylove,” she shared last year along with a photo from the BET Awards red carpet.
